Technically this tool is used to dip the end of the lit wick into the melted wax to extinguish it. This is personally not our favorite way to put a candle out, but it does eliminate almost all the smoke.

We do use this handy little tool if something falls into our candle or to help pull the trimmed debris away from the wick after trimming it.
